Do you ever have those summer days where your child comes to you and says…”I’m bored”? Well, there is a way to curb their boredom that not only keeps them entertained, but also brings them closer to Christ and helps them to share God’s love with others. It doesn’t even have to cost money!

In Matthew 25:14-30, Jesus tells a parable about servants who were given talents. Read this parable with your kids and talk about what it represents. The man going on the journey is Jesus who has given us (the servants) gifts (the talents) to use for His glory.

Next try to come up with a list of all sorts of talents. Remember, talents aren’t just creative abilities, but everything that God has given us including time, money, knowledge, and the list continues. Let everyone in the family pick out one talent that they have that they are willing to commit to God’s glory. (Young children can help make cards, bake cookies and much more. There is something for everyone!) Then, set some goals in regard to how much each family member will use their talent. Here are some ideas:

  • Every time someone says they are bored, they will spend 30 minutes using this talent for God
  • For every hour of TV or video games, I will spend 10 minutes on my talent for God
  • Every Tuesday evening, I will work on my talent for Jesus
  • I will spend 10 minutes every day using my talent for Jesus

Every week at family worship, be sure to ask each child how their talent sharing is going. It will be exciting to see all of the wonderful things God does through you and your family. Don’t forget to share your Family Fun activities with us, and let us know how this activity goes with your family!

For further Scripture study, read Corinthians 9:6-9.
