“Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land that the LORD swore to give your forefathers, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth.” ~ Deuteronomy 11:18-21
Imagine if you had reminders of God’s love and his presence everywhere. Sit down as a family and try to think of things in your house, outside, in the car, anywhere that remind you of God’s love, passages from the Bible, or anything along those lines. For example:
- What if your water pitcher said“Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:13-14).
- Or if there was a sign over your stove that read: “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth” (Revelation 3:15-16).
- Whenever you get bread out of your bread box or out of the bag, you can be reminded of God’s love, “Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness” (2 Corinthians 9:10).
- Suddenly washing your hands can remind you of God’s cleansing grace when your soap has a message like this: “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin” (Psalm 51:1-2).
- You can even create your own messages like “God will sweep away the sins in my life,”and attach it to your broom.
Sit down with your family and come up with as many of these verses and sayings as you can think of. Then you can make note cards, posters, and other fun things to remind you of God’s love all day long. You may have to help younger children write the words on their messages, but everyone can have fun decorating!
When you’re done making the message cards, have fun posting them all over the house together.
We’d love to hear about how your family enjoyed this family fun activity, along with any ideas you may have.
